What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a treatment specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders caused by the biomechanical dysfunction of the joints, particularly those which involve the spine. Due to its close relationship with the nervous system, mechanical dysfunction of the spine can be responsible for many cases of head, arm, trunk and leg pain, pins and needles and numbness.

What Disorders Can Be Treated?

Examples of problems commonly treated :
Acute low back pain
Chronic low back pain
Acute whiplash-associated disorders
Shoulder girdle pain/dysfunction
Adhesive capsulitis
Tennis elbow
Hip osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis
Patellofemoral pain syndrome
Plantar fasciitis
Migraine
Cervicogenic headache
Cervicogenic dizziness
Extremity joint conditions
Acute/subacute neck pain

How is Treatment Carried Out?

The Chiropractor makes manual adjustments, using a range of specific techniques designed to improve the function of the joints and relieve pain.

Will It Hurt?

Adjustments carried out by a qualified Chiropractor are usually painless. The ‘cracking’ noise that sometimes accompanies treatment is actually only the harmless popping of gas bubbles in the joint fluid.

Will I Have Discomfort After Treatment?

A small number of patients may experience discomfort after their first treatment. This is to be expected and is an integral part of the natural healing process. The reaction is an adaptation by the body to change following spinal or joint manipulation. It may only last a few minutes or hours. Some patients, if not forewarned, may think their condition is getting worse. In fact, to the contrary, their return to health has already begun. After treatment there is a physical change affecting bones, muscles, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels and cartilage all of which have to adapt and undergo the natural healing process.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Chiropractic treatment is not a ‘one off’ therapy. Patients will need to undergo a course of treatment specifically designed by their Chiropractor for them. Each treatment is geared not only to speed recovery but also to prevent further relapse. This may be followed if necessary by 3-6 monthly check ups to ensure continued good health. The fact that there is no pain or other symptoms does not preclude the possibility of joint problems which may develop gradually and cause pain at a later stage.
